Tinnitus Ringing In The Ears

Tinnitus is like a ringing bell in your ears at times it can be very annoying. It happens when you are subjected to high pitch environment like music concerts, Pubs etc. Tinnitus ringing in the ears starts in your inner ear. Most often, it is caused by damage to or the loss of sensory hair cells in the cochlea, or the inner ear.

One should seek medical help if ringing in your ear persists. Tinnitus is “sensorineural” in nature and due to hearing loss at the cochlea or cochlear nerve level you experience hearing loss . Many times tinnitus that comes and usually goes after some days and do not require any medical attention or treatment. If it doesn’t go one needs to see a doctor immediately.

When you experience ringing in ear you should always consult with ENT doctor first, consulting an Audiologist is also good as they are usually specialists and trained to perform hearing tests and assessments on Tinnitus. Audiologists specialize in hearing and balance disorders. Tinnitus doesn’t affect your balance, it is most commonly a symptom of hearing loss.

What are the precaution one should take if Tinnitus, ringing in the Ear persists?

  • Avoid anything that makes tinnitus worse, for eg. Loud noises or stimulants like caffeine.
  • Use earplugs when you are exposed to occupational work hazards
  • One should refrain from alcohol drinks, as it causes blood to flow into your inner ear and increase the ringing in your ear.
